Environmental Management

Nordic Semiconductor recognizes the impact of its business operations on the environment. The company strives to act responsibly towards the environment and conduct business in a way that supports the transition towards a more sustainable future.

Our main environmental aspects are related to product compliance and greenhouse gas emissions. To ensure control over our direct operations and also our suppliers’ environmental performance, Nordic Semiconductor is certified to ISO 14001 and requires all manufacturing partners to obtain the same certification standard. 

Environmental Policies Nordic Semiconductor’s environmental management is guided by two key policies that address environmental matters within our own operations and supply chain.  Environmental Impact Reduction policy outlines our commitment to reducing impacts for pollution, water and resources. The policy establishes principles for ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, monitoring and reporting environmental performance, and continuously improving strategies to reduce our environmental impact. Climate Change policy provides a framework for implementing measures for climate change mitigation and adaptation. The policy reinforces our commitment to energy efficiency improvement and transition to renewable energy across our own operations, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions monitoring and reporting, as well as our efforts to work with suppliers and promote sustainable sourcing practices, and continuously strive to improve our environmental performance with respect to our business operations.

 

 

Environmental Product Compliance

The electronics industry is subject to several legislations and standards aimed to reduce the impact on the environment.

Nordic Semiconductor is committed to comply with all applicable environmental legislative requirements as well as customer-specific requirements, and has controls in place for design and production processes to ensure compliance to those, such as, but not limited to:

• RoHS (Restriction of use of Certain Hazardous Substances), see Nordic's RoHS statement

• California Proposition 65 (The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act), see Nordic's California Proposition 65 statement

Being a fabless semiconductor company, close communication and cooperation with the manufacturing suppliers of our products are crucial for the hazardous substances management. Nordic Semiconductor has defined environmental requirements and specifications for its manufacturing suppliers to ensure full environmental product compliance.

Greenhouse gas emissions

Nordic Semiconductor is committed to reduce its impact on climate change, and places a high emphasis on both greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction and use of renewable energy in both its direct operations and outsourced manufacturing operations. The company has monitored annual GHG emissions since 2011 and reports annually to the Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) Climate Change questionnaire (www.cdp.net). The CDP report outlines how climate-related risks and opportunities are managed, and includes detailed information on GHG emissions and targets for emission reductions. Towards climate neutrality

Responding to the contribution to climate change, Nordic Semiconductor has set science-based GHG emission reduction targets, aligned with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Through our science-based targets validated by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), our ambition is to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions already by 2030, and shift towards net-zero GHG emissions across our value chain by 2050.

Nordic Semiconductor is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 60% by 2030 from a 2019 base year reducing Scope 3 GHG emissions 60% per USD value added by 2030 from a 2019 base year  (value added = sales revenue - the cost of goods and services purchased from external suppliers) reducing absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2019 base year reaching net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain by 2050

  

Resource use

Nordic Semiconductor strives to reduce the environmental impact throughout the life cycle of its products. While enabling energy efficient end products for the consumers, the company also targets to optimize the consumption of materials. This includes minimizing waste generation, avoiding hazardous substances, and preferring use of recycled materials and materials that are recyclable.
