ION Industries’ LED Matter Dimmer integrates nRF52840 SoC for Matter over Thread smart home connectivity

Dutch company ION Industries has released a Matter over Thread compatible LED dimmer that enables users to control any dimmable LED lighting from 0.3 W up to a maximum of 200 W, via a Matter-compatible smart home ecosystem or compatible smartphone app.

Matter over Thread wireless connectivity

The ‘LED Matter Dimmer’ integrates Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52840 advanced multiprotocol System-on-Chip (SoC) to enable ON/OFF power, dimming status, and minimum/maximum brightness control commands between the device and any Matter-certified smart home ecosystem, such as Apple Home and Amazon Alexa, using Matter over Thread wireless connectivity. Matter is an open-source standard created by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) that brings interoperability between smart home devices and ecosystems to reduce complexity for the end user.

“The user-friendly open standard Matter makes it possible for a user to control the LED Matter Dimmer along with all their other smart home devices from a single application, providing more convenience and comfort,” explains Erik Geijtenbeek, Sales Director at ION Industries.

The LED Matter Dimmer—which, according to the company, is the world’s first Matter-compatible smart dimmer employing a physical push-turn button—can remember the last used position of the lighting and provides a boost function to prevent unwanted high brightness when switching on the lamp. The device also supports global sustainable development goals through its energy-saving capabilities.

“The LED Matter Dimmer is an energy-saver because it can dim back to 0.3 W, while it’s possible to control the lighting remotely from the smart home app – thus the light can be switched on temporarily when the user is not at home,” says Geijtenbeek.

nRF Connect SDK aids development

In addition to the key hardware and software features of the nRF52840 SoC that helped ION Industries achieve its design goals for the LED Matter Dimmer, the company used the Nordic nRF Connect SDK (Software Development Kit) when creating its application code. The nRF52840 SoC and nRF Connect SDK 2.0.2 received the world’s first Thread 1.3 certification badge, that can be easily inherited by Nordic customers and is a prerequisite for Matter over Thread, where Bluetooth® LE is used to commission and Thread is used for data transfer.

“We developed part of our own application code with the Nordic SDK, which along with Nordic’s excellent technical support during product development helped shorten our development cycle and reduce the time to market,” concludes Geijtenbeek.
