MOKO SMART’s LW001-BG PRO Series tracker and LW006-SB smart badge integrate nRF52840 SoC for Bluetooth RSSI capability and ultra-low power consumption

Leading electronic manufacturer, MOKO SMART, has launched two new combination LoRaWAN and Bluetooth® LE trackers, the ‘LW001-BG PRO Series’ for asset/vehicle tracking, and the ‘LW006-SB’ designed as a smart badge for personnel safety applications. Both devices employ Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52840 SoC to provide Bluetooth LE wireless connectivity.

The IP67-rated LW001-BG PRO Series device is designed for both indoor and outdoor tracking across logistics, asset management, warehousing, theft protection, and livestock applications. The LW006 smart badge comes in a lightweight card-sized form factor and features an alert button for employees to trigger an emergency alarm. It is designed for use in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and other applications where workforce safety may be a factor.

For indoor use both the LW001-BG PRO Series and LW006 employ the nRF52840 SoC’s Bluetooth Received Strength Signal Indication (RSSI) capability as well as Wi-Fi to determine position, while in outdoor applications they employ GPS. Proprietary indoor/outdoor position switching technology allows the devices to adaptively switch between Bluetooth and GPS when moving between indoors and outdoors.

We selected the nRF52840 SoC because it is cost effective, can support Bluetooth positioning, and because of the sensitivity of the radio and the very low power consumption

Powerful MCU supervises sensors

The nRF52840 SoC’s ARM® Cortex™-M4 MCU supervises a 3-axis accelerometer that can be used to detect movement and inactivity, as well as for fragile and valuable goods protection. For example, in vehicle tracking applications, the device can report its position to a Cloud server if a vehicle is unexpectedly moved. For livestock applications, a notification can be sent if an animal remains stationary for an extended duration, which could indicate injury or illness. When the LW001-BG PRO Series is used to track fragile goods, users can turn on a vibration detection function that records and reports strong vibrations—indicating, for example, that a package has been dropped—to prevent disputes over liability.

The LW001-BG PRO Series is powered by a Li-SOCl₂ cell that provides a battery life of approximately five years in standard operation. The LW006 is powered by a 1500 mAh Li-Poly battery that provides more than 90 days of battery life between recharge. The extended battery life of both solutions is made possible in part, by the nRF52840 SoC’s ultra-low power consumption and fully-automatic power management system.
