Low power wireless connectivity solutions for smart home
China-based company Wisdom has launched a Bluetooth® LE and Matter over Thread compatible module, designed for use in space-constrained, low-power smart home and lighting applications.
The 12 by 15 by 2 mm ‘W-MT-36’ module is powered by Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52840 multiprotocol System-on-Chip (SoC). The SoC is a Thread certified component and is suitable for developing products for the Matter connected home ecosystem.
The Wisdom module supports Bluetooth LE and Matter over Thread technologies. For Matter applications the module uses the nRF52840 SoC’s Thread connectivity for transport and Bluetooth LE connectivity for commissioning new devices to a network.
The combination of wireless technologies enables applications such as smart home controllers and bridges, ON/OF switching for smart lighting, and various IoT smart sensors. Matter over Thread prototyping is supported by Nordic’s nRF52840 DK single-board development kit for the nRF52840 SoC.
“By using the W-MT-36 module, no source code design is needed from the manufacturer and customer, enabling faster time to market with new Matter technology,” explains Robert Qiu, General Manager, Wisdom.
“We used the Nordic nRF52840 SoC in our W-MT-36 module due to the chip’s ultra-low power consumption, robust radio sensitivity, powerful processing capability, and generous memory capacity.
“In addition, we appreciate Nordic’s technical information, reference designs, good application engineers, and excellent response times.”
For the next iteration of Wisdom’s smart home module solution, due to be released in the second half of 2025, the company has committed to using Nordic’s next-generation, advanced nRF54L15 SoC, which features generous 1.5 MB non-volatile memory (NVM) and 256 KB RAM to run multiple wireless protocols concurrently, including Bluetooth LE, Thread, Matter, and 2.4 GHz proprietary protocols.
