The combination of the nRF9151 and IIJ’s SoftSIM enables global connectivity and simplifies product design for cellular IoT end products

Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF9151 low power module for advanced cellular IoT applications now includes SoftSIM support for Japan’s only SoftSIM provider, Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ). By using a SoftSIM instead of a traditional SIM, product developers can reduce SIM and Bill of Materials (BoM) costs, simplify design, and lower power consumption for cellular IoT end products based on Nordic’s nRF9151 module. SoftSIM is ideal for space-constrained cellular IoT devices with low power consumption requirements, such as wearables and smart sensors.

nRF9151 SoftSIM support in Japan

The nRF9151 module, integrated with IIJ’s SoftSIM technology, supports communication profiles for use in Japan and internationally. The SoftSIM not only eliminates the need for physical SIM cards and sockets, but it also enables global connectivity solutions with significantly reduced size and power consumption. IIJ provides comprehensive SoftSIM support and assistance with proof-of-concept development.

"Our collaboration with IIJ allows us to offer a SoftSIM solution that combines Nordic's cutting-edge cellular IoT hardware with Japan's leading SoftSIM experts," said Bjørn Åge "Bob" Brandal, VP of Sales and Marketing, APAC at Nordic Semiconductor. "The integration of nRF9151 and IIJ's SoftSIM delivers significant reductions in BOM and manufacturing costs, enables design miniaturization, and simplifies global connectivity for our customers, particularly in the strategic Japanese market."

Robust security features

Nordic’s nRF9151 is a highly integrated and compact module with a multimode modem, advanced processing capabilities, and robust security features delivering exceptional performance and versatility. The nRF9151 achieves a 20 percent smaller footprint compared to its predecessors and will also support Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technology. NTN enables IoT connectivity to reach even the most remote areas of the planet, unlocking new possibilities for global coverage.

Using the nRF9151, developers can enjoy out-of-the-box connectivity as well as tailor applications to their specific requirements. The SoftSIM solution offers access to globally certified cellular IoT technology, simplifying regulatory compliance for IoT devices globally and enhancing support for Japan-specific IoT applications and standards.
