Matter - Development Tools

At Nordic Semiconductor, we are committed to driving innovation in low-power wireless solutions, and Matter represents an exciting leap forward for smart home connectivity. Matter is an open-source, royalty-free standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), designed to enable seamless interoperability between IoT devices from different manufacturers.

As a leader in Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE), Thread, and Wi-Fi, Nordic provides Matter-ready solutions that help developers create secure, low-power, and future-proof smart home products. Our nRF52840 and nRF5340 SoCs, combined with our nRF Connect SDK, offer a robust platform for building Matter-compliant devices using Thread and Bluetooth LE. Additionally, our nRF7002 Wi-Fi companion IC extends Matter support to Wi-Fi-based applications.

With Nordic’s energy-efficient hardware and developer-friendly software tools, bringing Matter-certified products to market has never been easier. Whether you're building smart lighting, door locks, sensors, or other home automation devices, Nordic's proven, scalable, and secure wireless solutions ensure a smooth path to Matter certification.

The tools to get you started

We offer development tools that make it easy to develop Matter products based on our nRF52, nRF53 and nRF54L Series SoCs. We enable you to build your product as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality. We provide tools for developing code, testing it, debugging, and much more.

Below is an overview of all relevant development tools for developing a Matter over Thread or over Wi-Fi product. Make sure you also check out the Development hardware and Development software tabs.

Desktop Development Tools

nRF Sniffer for 802.15.4

A helpful and valuable sniffer for learning and debugging 802.15.4 protocols, like Thread and Zigbee.

nRF Connect for Desktop

nRF Connect for Desktop is a cross-platform framework for development applications. It contains applications for testing Bluetooth Low Energy and LTE links, power optimization, programming and more.

nRF Connect for VS Code

nRF Connect for VS Code lets you develop, build, and debug applications based on the nRF Connect SDK using the VS Code Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

nRF Util

nRF Util is a unified command line utility for Nordic products.

nRF Command Line Tools

The nRF Command Line Tools are used for development, programming, and debugging of Nordic Semiconductor's nRF51, nRF52, nRF53 and nRF91 Series devices.

Thread tools

Topology monitor

To test with additional Thread devices in your network, you can use nRF52840 Dongles. Our nRF Thread Topology monitor is well suited to visualize the Network.
