The StruXure+ pergola and cabana range integrates Nordic’s nRF5340 SoC to provide seamless Matter over Thread connectivity

Luxury pergola manufacturer, StruXure, has released a new range of smart pergolas and cabanas that are the first in the U.S. to employ Matter over Thread to enable a fully connected outdoor ecosystem. Designed for residential or commercial installations, the ‘StruXure+’ range enables users to effortlessly set up, control, and customize their pergola from a single smartphone app.

StruXure worked with technology engineering and development specialist, DornerWorks, to create a customized border router along with the Matter over Thread-based end nodes to control devices such as lights, motorized louvers, fans, and heaters. The Matter over Thread end nodes employ Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF5340 advanced multiprotocol SoC enabling them to be operated from an app on the user’s smartphone via a compatible smart home ecosystem.

A common Matter framework

“The outdoor pergola promises a user the ability to control the entire pergola experience from the palm of their hand,” says Nate Bowen, Technical Product Manager, StruXure. “StruXure wants to be able to continue to evolve the connected experience over time with new device types that can enhance the end user’s experience. From lights, louvers, heaters, and fans, Matter provides a common framework for communicating with and updating devices, and will speed up the process of adding new device types in the future.”

Nordic’s nRF5340 SoC is used as the primary application and networking processor to provide the Matter over Thread connectivity. The nRF5340 SoC employs dual Arm® Cortex®-M33 processors; a high performance application processor capable of DSP and Floating Point (FP) with 1 MB Flash and 512 KB RAM, and a fully programmable, ultra-low power network processor with 256 KB Flash and 64 KB RAM. For software development, Nordic’s nRF Connect SDK integrates the Zephyr RTOS and supports applications using Matter and Thread, as well as Bluetooth® LE, Wi-Fi, and cellular IoT.

Mature Matter over Thread connectivity

“The primary driving factor for using the nRF5340 SoC was its maturity in the Thread and Matter ecosystems, while the nRF Connect SDK’s integration with Zephyr was also a contributing factor,” says Michael Cotter, Director of Engineering, DornerWorks. “DornerWorks developed all of the application code using the nRF Connect SDK’s Matter framework, while the SDK was also used for device drivers and peripheral management.

“Nordic also provides extensive online documentation and example projects for Zephyr, Thread, and Matter and DornerWorks has received positive support from Nordic FAEs on previous projects.”
