nPM2100 evaluation kit, software, and documentation are now available to developers

Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low power wireless connectivity solutions, has made the nPM2100 Power Management IC (PMIC) available for development. Since the introduction of the device in January, early customers have started designing it into various primary cell applications, ranging from personal health monitoring to wireless industrial sensors. Now, all developers can take advantage of the innovative PMIC’s capabilities to optimize power efficiency and system performance.

The nPM2100 is packed with energy-saving and system management features effectively bridging the gap between the basic regulators often used in these applications and a full power management solution. For designers of small, wireless IoT applications, these features enable longer battery life or the option to use smaller batteries for more compact designs.

Key energy-saving features

  • 35 nA ship mode with multiple wakeup options – enables products to be shipped with the battery installed and doubles as an on/off-button.
  • <200 nA hibernate mode with timed wakeup ranging from seconds to days – Extends battery life by up to 3x battery for products that wake up infrequently.
  • 150 nA boost converter delivering up to 90.5% efficiency at 10 µA current draw, increasing to 95% with higher currents – Ensures longer battery life for low-power products requiring higher operating voltage than the battery can deliver.
  • Battery fuel gauging – Provides accurate estimates of remaining battery energy, improving user experience and reducing premature battery disposal.

Advanced system management features

In addition, the product features functions that help design more reliable products with enhanced end-user experience.

  • External watchdog - Resets the host processor or power cycles the entire system.
  • Hard reset function - Allows user re-boot from a long button press rather than removing and reinserting the battery.
  • Failed boot recovery - Restarts the system if the host processor fails to boot – especially helpful for sealed applications without user battery access.

With these functions packed into a compact 1.9 x 1.9 mm package requiring only six external components, the nPM2100 delivers an unmatched power management solution to the market.

Seamless integration with Nordic´s complete wireless solutions

Nordic´s nPM Family of PMICs are highly integrated solutions that reduce system complexity, bill-of-material (BOM), and board space. By integrating the nPM2100, developers can optimize battery performance and system efficiency from the battery to the antenna. As part of Nordic´s complete low-power wireless solution, the nPM2100 PMIC is designed to complement the market-leading nRF52, nRF53, and nRF54 Series SoCs, ensuring highly efficient power management for wearables, smart home devices, industrial sensors, and other primary battery-powered IoT applications.

Availability and packaging

The new nPM2100 Evaluation Kit is available for order through Nordic´s distribution partners. WLCSP packaged devices are sampling now, with QFN sampling starting in a couple of weeks. WLCSP and QFN packaged devices will enter volume production in June and September 2025, respectively.
