LEO-L50 uses Nordic nRF5340 SoC for core processing and Bluetooth LE connectivity to support wireless tracking of containers and fleets

Advantech, a global leader in IoT intelligent systems and embedded platforms, has released an award-winning outdoor asset tracking solution for the global logistics market. The ‘LEO-L50’ outdoor asset management device enables near real time tracking of large outdoor assets, such as containers and fleets. It monitors the location and status of otherwise untraceable assets without a power source, providing the remote visibility to enable AI-driven route optimization and journey planning.

Designed to be highly durable and explosion-safe, the the IP67-rated, water- and heat-resistant device’s precise dimensions fit seamlessly into shipping container door grooves. The LEO-L50 employs Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF5340 dual-core Bluetooth® 5.4 SoC for core processing and short-range wireless connectivity. The nRF5340 SoC’s application processor supervises the integrated sensors (including temperature sensor and door sensor), while the network processor transmits the location and sensor data to other devices via Bluetooth LE. The nRF5340 also runs the on-board cellular chip for asset tracking via the Cloud. Furthermore, the SoC’s multiple pins allow Advantech to integrate additional functionality on the modular device.

The nRF5340 is the world’s first wireless SoC with two Arm® Cortex®-M33 processors. The combination of two flexible processors, the advanced feature set, and an operating temperature up to 105°C, makes it the ideal choice for processor-intensive IoT applications. The LEO-L50 uses a Li-ion rechargeable battery to achieve up to seven years of operations, complemented by solar charging functionality for continuous, eco-friendly power. This longevity is achieved thanks in part to the low power capabilities of the Nordic nRF5340 SoC.

“Long battery life is our top target, so power consumption and stability in extreme environments are key conditions for our product,” says Kenny Tsai, Advantech Product Manager. “The LEO-L50 supports enterprises in digital transformation and Scope 3 carbon emission monitoring, helping businesses achieve environmental and sustainability goals while enhancing operational efficiency and market competitiveness.”

Advantech’s LEO-L50 won the 2025 Taiwan Excellence Award and the prestigious 2025 iF Design Award – selected from almost 11,000 entries across 66 countries in one of the world’s most influential design competitions.

“We selected the Nordic nRF5340 for our LEO-L50 outdoor asset management device due to the SoC’s powerful computing and low power consumption capabilities, as well as its support for the Zephyr RTOS which provides greater flexibility during development,” says Tsai.

“Nordic’s application engineers offered quick responses and helped us solve any issues we raised. We also used the comprehensive Nordic nRF Connect SDK [Software Development Kit] and Nordic nRF5340 DK [Development Kit] to conduct feasibility studies, which helped to speed up the entire process.”
